Why Moisture Makes Wood Floors Buckle
Hardwood is a natural, breathing material. It constantly absorbs and releases moisture from the surrounding air to try and reach balance with its environment.
When relative humidity spikes—typically in a damp crawl space or unsealed basement—the air beneath your home gets heavy with water vapor. Your subfloor and the underside of your hardwood planks soak that up like a sponge.
As wood takes on moisture, it expands. Because flooring is tightly installed board-by-board, individual planks have nowhere to go horizontally when they swell. As the pressure builds and adjacent boards slam against one another, the flooring literally has to release that stress somewhere. The path of least resistance is upward, causing the planks to lift right off the subfloor and warp.
The Trap of Just Replacing the Flooring
If you pull up ruined hardwood and simply lay down new planks without addressing the environment, you’re just setting yourself up for round two. That new wood will absorb the exact same moisture, swell, and buckle right on schedule.
To fix buckling floors for good, you have to cut off the moisture driving the problem at ground level.
